Frequently asked questions

I have a power cut, what should I do?

Check with your neighbours
If your neighbours are also without power, or if the street-lights are off at night, it indicates that the power cut is caused by a problem in your area. Call the national power cut helpline on 105 for updates about the situation and for information about when to expect the power cut to end.

If your neighbours have power
If your house seems to be the only one without power, there may be a problem with your fusebox or wiring.

Trip switch on
If your trip switch is on, but the power in your house is not working, try turning the switch off and back on again. This may reset it and restore power.

Test button
If turning the trip switch off and on again doesn’t restore the power, press the test button. This will test whether electricity is actually coming into your house.
If pressing the test button doesn’t cause the switch to trip, there is no electricity entering your home.

Trip switch off
Make sure that you turn the trip switch on if it has turned off. If the trip switch stays on but the power still does not work, make sure that the main switch on the fuse box is also turned on.

Switch trips immediately
If the switch trip immediately trips after you turn it on, try turning off the fuse box and turning the trio switch on again. If it still doesn’t stay on, it indicates that there is a fault with the fuse box or trip switch.

A faulty appliance could also be the cause of your power cut, by causing your trip switch to trip. To find out which appliance could be causing the problem, turn them off, and then methodically turn them on, one by one, until you identify which one is causing the trip to switch.

If your power cut is caused by an internal problem, such as a problem with your wiring, appliances, or fuse box, make sure that you call a qualified electrician to carry out repairs.

I’m moving house, what should I do?

If you are planning on moving house, contact SSE Southern Electric to inform them of the change of address.
Make sure that you take final meter readings when you leave your old house, and meter readings as soon as you arrive at your new house. This will ensure that you only pay for the energy that you use.
